چکیده

In general, a human has a pair of mental foramina, a single foramen on either side. However, when it is double or multiple, and smaller than the mental foramen, the additional foramen is termed accessory mental foramen (AMF) (Sisman et al., 2012). An AMF foramen is reported to be rare, with prevalence ranging from 1.4 to 10% (Balcioglu & Kocaelli, 2009). Bidimensional radiograph examinations, such as intraoral and panoramic radiographs, are limited and depend on the geometric projection of the structure (Mraiwa et al., 2003; Angelopoulos et al., 2008), and can underestimate the presence or extension of this variation and are not entirely reliable for presurgical planning (Katakami et al., 2008). Although panoramic radiography is generally the most common choice for presurgical planning, its limitations must be taken into consideration. AMFs are rarely observed with conventional radiography techniques, because the long axis of an AMF is generally less than 1.5 mm, and it is difficult to recognize this structure (Sisman et al.).

Evaluation of prevalence and pattern of maxillary sinus mucosal thickening in cone beam computed tomography of dental implant candidates in Shiraz, Iran

BACKGROUND AND AIM: This study aimed to assess maxillary sinus floor membrane thickness and ostium patency (OP) in patients undergoing cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) evaluation for implant placement in the posterior maxilla. Mucosal thickening (MT) could be cause of post-operative complications in implant procedures; awareness of this incidence could help proper detection and further succ...

Accessory mental foramen: A rare anatomical variation detected by cone-beam computed tomography

The mental foramen is a bilateral opening in the vestibular portion of the mandible through which nerve endings, such as the mental nerve, emerge. In general, the mental foramen is located between the lower premolars. This region is a common area for the placement of dental implants. It is very important to identify anatomical variations in presurgical imaging exams since damage to neurovascula...

Assessment of Accessory Mental Foramen by Cone-Beam Computed Tomography

Introduction: Any foramen in the buccal surface of mandibular body that transfers mental nerve and vessels except mental foramen, is called Accessory Mental Foramen (AMF). The objective of this study was the determination of the AMF using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods:  this descriptive study was done on 180 CBCT projections which were selected by convenience samp...

Evaluation of the Prevalence of Bifid Mandibular Condyle Detected on Cone Beam Computed Tomography Images in a Turkish Population Evaluación de la Prevalencia de Cóndilo Mandibular Bífido Detectado en Tomografía Computadorizada Cone-Beam en una Población Turca

The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of the BMC phenomenon in a Turkish patient population. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 2634 consecutive patients were retrospectively reviewed. The Chi-squared test was used to determine potential differences in the distribution of BMCs when stratified by sex and side. Among the 2634 patients, 42 (1.7%) patients were found to have...
